Proper cleansing of skin is essential to keep your skin looking radiant, glowing and healthy. We get impurities to our skin from outdoor activities as well as indoor activities like cooking, washing, putting make up and so on. So it’s very important to clean your face thoroughly at least twice a day.
Believe me cleansing your skin is the most important step of your daily beauty care routine.
Before starting discussion let me show you what experts say about this!
Jamie B. MacKelfresh, MD, assistant professor in the department of dermatology at Emory University, says
“Regularly washing your face (once in the morning, once before bed, and after any activity that involves sweating) prevents clogged pores, refreshes the skin, and even helps mitigate the symptoms of some skin conditions, such as rosacea and acne”
Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, says
“Proper facial cleansing prevents acne breakouts, can improve skin health, and may even reduce skin inflammation,”
Proper skin cleansing has so many benefits. And of course cleansing skin of other parts of the body is very important too!
Let’s have a look at all the benefits we can get through it!
What are the benefits that proper skin cleansing can give?
-A common benefit of facial cleansing is the removal of dirt, oil, dead cells and other unwanted debris that you are getting throughout the day. All of them form a thick layer over your skin. These will clog the pores and leading to so many problems like acne, black heads etc.
–As the dirt form a thick layer over the skin, it will make difficult for other skin care products to penetrate the skin properly.
– Cleansing helps maintain PH balance of the skin which can retain sufficient water in it and helping the skin maintain a proper level of hydration. Thereby prevent dehydration otherwise your skin will look rough, wrinkled and aged.
-Cleansing helps maintain proper pore size.
-Cleansing also prevents the production of excess oils.
-It is a well-known fact your skin care products work best on adequately clean skin. Without getting adequately cleansed skin you can’t get full benefits of them.
Ultimately to have refreshed, vibrant looking skin it needs to be cleaned properly.
Now how can we clean our skin properly?
What are the basic steps?
There are loads of modalities! Face wash, soap, facial cleanser, make-up remover, face sheet, cleaning mask, some cleansing devices and so on. The micellar water – a latest name added to cleaning your skin. The list will go up and up! That might be confusing for most of us. I will try my best to remove all of your confusion regarding this very important and basic step of beauty care routine.
Lots of modalities as well as lack of proper knowledge – both has made a simple thing more complex!
What do you think about cleaning your skin properly? Putting some amount of facewash, rub it and rinse with water and get the job done! It’s so simple???Indeed proper cleansing of your skin is not a complex or hard task. Not a very simple thing either! You need to consider so many things before making the matter work for you and bring you all the benefit!
To get properly clean skin you must follow so Do’s and Don’ts
1. Know your skin type first! But why?
Let me tell you about expert’s opinion!
Dr. Schultz says, “You may be doing more damage to your skin if you are using the wrong products for your skin type and/or condition.” a board-certified dermatologist practicing in New York City.
So know your skin type first and that will steer you up to choose right thing for your skin.
2. Choose the right cleansing agent according to your skin type
For dry or sensitive skin:
A cream-based cleanser is suitable because it can give you the moisturizing effects that your dry skin longing for.
And you must avoid gel-based or “foaming” face washes if you have dry/sensitive skin.
People with sensitive skin should pay extra attention to the rest of their cleanser’s ingredients, too. Especially cleansers containing alcohol, sulfates which may cause irritation to the skin.
For oily or acne-prone skin:
A gel-based cleanser is good for them. Why?? Because they contain more acids than a cream -based one they will be more drying to oily/acne- prone skin.
For normal skin:
Water-based cleanser is a right choice for them.
After a lot of makeup:
Irrespective of your skin type ,each time after you wear a heavy make-up you need to wash your face with an oil-based cleanser followed by a water- or gel-based cleanser.
The two-step routine is a much required thing after putting heavy make-up.
This is intended to clean your skin thoroughly.
Ask why two steps approach needed after make-up?
This is because
The first cleanser’s job is to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and other heavy products,
And the second one will remove any left-over off your skin.
The reason is oil-based cleansers are great at removing dirt, excess oil.
3. Clean at least twice daily
Wash regularly your skin once at morning and once at night before going to bed.
At morning you need to wash off the products that you put at night like serum/moisturizer. Because you now need to put your day time products.
At night before going to bed wash-off your face again to remove the dirt or other impurities that you have got throughout the day.
But use two different cleanser one for morning or the other for night. This is because in case of dry or sensitive skin you need to use relatively gentler cleanser at morning.
Or suppose you are fighting against acne with a cleanser that is made up of salicylic acid it will be too harsh for you skin to put it twice a day.
Besides two times washing per day you have to wash your skin after work-outs or any activity producing excessive sweats.
4. Use the water of right temperature
Use water of normal temperature or at least Luke warm water.
Hot water can damage your fine delicate skin. It can also damage the oil barrier of the skin that is necessary for maintaining skin integrity.
Special care should be taken for those having dry or sensitive skin. This is very harmful for them. A skin condition like rosacea can be triggered from this.
5. Make sure your face towels are clean.
6. Use of toner
7: Use moisturizer quickly after cleansing.
Put your moisturizer after toning of your skin especially while your skin is still a bit damp. This will make a big difference.
The Don’ts are :-
1. Don’t get too obsessed with over-cleansing
Because excessive cleaning – too frequent or too vigorous washing can damage the protective barrier of your skin formed by lipids and oil.
Jerome Garden, M.D., director of the Physicians Laser and Dermatology Institute in Chicago warns about too much face-washing. “Not only does too much washing lead to dry, irritated skin, but it can actually lead to the skin paradoxically producing too much oil.” So, the vast majority of us should stick to the twice-a-day routine.
2. Please don’t wash your face for a longer period of time than it is actually required.
Also be careful about timing. Some of you may think washing for a longer period of time may ensure you thorough washing but this is not at all true.
Ideally rub for 20-30 seconds or at best for one minute with a facewash or scrub or cleanser in a circular motion then wash off with warm or normal water is enough!
In reality length of time does not have anything to do with perfect washing.
3. Don’t use too hot or too cold water
4. Don’t use dirty towel for wiping.
5. Don’t use wrong cleanser.
Few important thing that has created much hype are micellar water and cleansing device. But in fact how much effective or important they are?
Let me shade some light on it!
Micellar water has been popular for decades in France where it was first discovered. In France the water was extremely harsh which lead to the search for a super gentler alternative like micellar water.
Julie Russak, MD, of Russak Dermatology Clinic in NYC says about micellar water “Hard tap water is charged with a high quantity of dissolved minerals.” “These can affect the protective barrier of the skin and even deteriorate it, making skin vulnerable and susceptible to environmental damage and pollution.”
What does it contain?
It consists of purified water, moisturizers like glycerin, and mild surfactants – the tiny cleansing molecules suspended in water. Its micelles have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic qualities.
Some say it as magic elixir! Really???
Let me explain this for you!
Its brings multiple benefits for your skin!
As a cleansing agent it removes dirt and oil from your skin!
The mild surfactant that it contains form micelle – a tiny magnet that pulls all the dirt/oil/make-up from your face!
It hydrates your skin! How???
It hydrates your skin through one of its important component – glycerin. Glycerin has been shown to increase skin permeability as well.
And we all know the role of glycerin for skin hydration.
It is often called multi-purpose water! Why??
Believe me it suits for all skin types! Be it dry, oily, sensitive or combination – all types of skin! This is an incredible benefit of micellar water.
It does not contain ingredients that are known to cause skin irritation thereby making it very beneficial for sensitive skin.
Its other important component – glycerin-is also helpful in reducing inflammation and irritation to the skin.
It can tone up your skin!
It is better than most of the toner that are available.
Toner contains alcohol but micellar does not-that’s why it differs and making it a better alternative for your skin toning.
How does it work”?
The molecules of these mild surfactants join to form micelles, a type of spherical chemical structure that helps pull dirt and oil from the skin.
How can we use micellar water??
Using process is much easier than anything else!
Take a cotton ball, soak it into micellar water, micelles adhere to the cotton and remove the dirt /oil/make-up from your face as you swipe it across your facial skin.
And wait! You need not to rinse it! Oh my God! What else???
So don’t rinse and allow your skin to get all the magical benefits that it offers to you throughout the day.
But remember! After a heavy make-up you need to add some extra thing!
That is in this case micellar water should be used as a make-up remover. Remove make—up by micellar water than clean your face by other your regular cleanser.
Facial cleansing brushes
Facial cleansing brushes can efficiently cleanses your skin of dirt, oil, make-up
It can be a major bonus to your pre-existing skin care routine.
It can create a perfect lather to your skin without costing any extra time giving you a perfectly clean, exfoliated skin!
But it has few drawbacks too! Not drawbacks actually, some important issues need to be addressed!
You need to take some extra care for your brushes that is to clean it off regularly to get its cleaning benefits.
You need to change brush heads regularly!
Also you need to find out the right one, the best one for you among so many choices! That needs some extra search!
So at the end of the discussion let me sum up all the steps for you! Know your skin types, choose the right products for you, know the do’s and don’ts of skin cleansing! Apply them on a regular basis and have clear, healthy and radiant skin! Getting clear and healthy skin is that simple & easy !
